Context

Urban mobility is evolving as cities grow denser
and commuting patterns shift.

As the relationship between the metropolis and rural areas is transforming, moving around the city has also changed over the last few years.

There is now a huge variety of new transportation modes available to people living in big cities. Also, the streets have become a place where people can go for a jog and ride their bikes or exercice.

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

For this project we were commissioned with providing:

  • UX Research feedback
  • Low-fidelity wireframes
  • Concept testing results

What are we solving?

Despite the wealth of data at our fingertips, modern commuting has introduced a new kind of stress: decision fatigue. With dozens of routes, various transport modes, and the constant pressure of congested streets, the “simplest” path isn’t always obvious.

Our mission was to solve a dual-purpose problem. We asked ourselves:

“How might we help urban commuters plan journeys that save time and reduce environmental impact?”

solution

A real-time mobility app that aggregates up-to-date transport data and recommends the fastest, most reliable itinerary based on live user feedback.

Real-time information powered by user feedback

  • Interactive Route Insights: View real-time emojis along your selected itinerary, providing a snapshot of the city’s current pulse.
  • Direct Transit Feedback: This feature enables passengers to report on the quality of their specific transport mode, bridging the communication gap between the commuter and the service provider.
  • Crowdsourced Context: These markers are dropped by the UrbanSync community to highlight live conditions, from hidden gems to transit delays.
  • Multi-Tiered Safety Protocol: The reporting feature provides a streamlined communication bridge, enabling users to escalate issues to the operator or contact police via a single-action command.

Customize the app for itineraries that suit the user

reward the user for going green

To drive sustainable urban behavior, UrbanSync implements a seamless reward loop. Every time a user opts for a “Go Green” alternative such as eco-friendly transit they are instantly credited with points.

These points serve as a digital currency within the UrbanSync ecosystem, redeemable for:

  • Brand Engagement: Exclusive UrbanSync merchandise and “Goodies.”

  • Cultural Access: Preferred rates and credit toward local venue ticketing.

  • Local Economy Support: Value-redemption at UrbanSync affiliated partner stores.

Building the solution

Methodology

We formulated hypotheses based on personal transit experiences and successfully validated them through qualitative research.

Our primary objective was to identify the specific friction points within the daily commute.

  • Reliability & Delays: Fluctuations in schedule consistency.

  • Capacity & Crowding: The physical density of the transit environment.

  • Ergonomics & Comfort: The qualitative experience of the journey.

Key insights

Users across European cities share mixed experiences with public transport, citing affordability benefits but facing infrastructure and safety challenges.

Listening to the Commuter

The data defines three non-negotiable pillars:

  • Contextual Awareness: Users require a “social pulse”—real-time insights on crowding and disruptions, exactly when decisions are made.

  • Foundational Reliability: Sustainability is a luxury without consistency. For a mode to be viable, it must be a guaranteed constant.
  • The Incentive Gap: Cost is both a barrier and an opportunity to reward positive transit behavior rather than penalizing it.

Meet Chiara (32, Berlin):

A digital native, highly tech-literate, that uses public transit not just to avoid getting lost, but to optimize her busy daily schedule. Her main challenge isn’t understanding technology—it’s navigating the friction of moving to a new country and managing a fast-paced life.

With the problem statement clearly defined, the transition to ideation required a systematic approach to feature set development.

Design

UrbanSync. The solution to efficient communication and less stressful commuting

UrbanSync synthesizes high-density navigation with social-traffic intelligence. Moving beyond static data, our Social Pulse model leverages real-time community feedback to address critical transit friction points. This collaborative architecture empowers commuters to navigate based on lived reality, effectively bridging the gap between scheduled plans and actual city conditions.

UX Enhancements & Core Features

1. Intuitive Dashboard (Personalized Home)

  • Dynamic Greeting: Contextual messaging for a tailored user experience.

  • Favorites Slider: Instant access to pre-registered destinations for one-tap navigation.

  • Live Environment Data: Real-time weather integration and local event discovery.

2. Advanced Route Customization (Improved Search)

Users can now filter itineraries based on specific travel priorities:

  • Fast: Prioritizes the shortest duration.

  • Reliable: Favors routes with the highest historical and live consistency.

  • Comfort: Minimizes crowded transitions and prioritizes high-quality transit environments.

  • Green: Highlights low-pollution routes optimized for cycling and walking.

3. Interactive Navigation & Community Intelligence

Key Takeaways

  • The Challenge: Modern urban transit has evolved into a landscape of fragmented and complex commuting options.

  • The Necessity: To ensure punctuality and peace of mind, commuters now require more than schedules—they need real-time, adaptive navigation.

  • The UrbanSync Solution: We bridge the information gap by synthesizing hyper-personalized routing with crowdsourced intelligence.

  • The Impact: By providing high-fidelity data, we transform the user experience from transit-uncertainty to total navigational confidence.

Future Roadmap

Moving forward, our strategy centers on a continuous improvement loop. We will initiate rigorous usability testing to gather direct user insights, embracing a #FailFast philosophy to rapidly identify and resolve friction points. This iterative process will culminate in the design of high-fidelity prototypes, transitioning UrbanSync from a refined concept to a fully developed, market-ready solution for global urban mobility.
